The Mae Tao Clinic was founded in 1989 by the Burmese physician Dr Cynthia Maung, who was a refugee herself at that time. Since then the influx of refugees has been increasing dramatically, which has also led to a rising number of patients at the clinic. Up to 250 people ask for help every day at the clinic, which is tolerated but not officially acknowledged by the Thai government. At the clinic the refugees do not only receive medical treatment for themselves and their families, they also have a safe place to stay until they recover, they get healthy meals and, in case of a prolonged stay, their children have the opportunity to attend a school.
Unfortunately, the clinic is in constant need of financial support. People there are dying of diseases which could be very easily cured in Europe - only because the clinic lacks antibiotics. We could no longer bear this situation and are now financing two wards at the clinic and some smaller health programs.
Every now and then, we transfer to the clinic of Mae Tao a certain amount of funds to purchase medical machineries and supplies.
