Naked floor and windy walls

The official refugee camps in Thailand are hosting more than 160.000 Burmese refugees. Major international aid agencies are assisting these refugees in the camps. Approximately 1 million Burmese refugees are living outside the Thai refugee camps, most of them are illegal and without assistance.

These refugees (officially defined as migrants) live under dramatic circumstances, often exploited. Only in rare cases their salaries allow them to cover their daily living expenses. With not much more than 1 Euro a day (this amount is approx. one third of the offical Thai minimum wage) it is hard to buy more than the daily food. Additional basic expenses like school fees for their children and medical care are unachievable for the "migrants".

Help without Frontiers is funding schools for several thousand refugee children in Thailand, committing itself always to a longterm period. All the running costs are covered, among them teacher salaries, teaching supplies, students'stationary, rent, student transportation, uniforms, products for personal hygiene, medicine, sport equipment and in many cases also the daily lunch.

Monthly meetings are held with every school in which reports and invoices of the last month are handed over, salaries and cash advance for the next month are paid, problems solved and future planes discussed. We also arrange help in case of emergency situations and contribute to improve the livelihood of the students' families.

The cost of sending a refugee child to school is on average 50 Euro per year (approx. 75 USD). This varies from 20 Euro inside Burma to 100 Euro on the Thai side (40 to 150 USD). Several schools in Thailand are funded by school adopters which commit to at least 3 years.
